The Challenge

The Business & Technical Problem

Over 80 engineers across 12 distinct product teams were building isolated UI components, resulting in conflicting brand themes, bloated duplicate CSS payloads, and severe accessibility failures across the enterprise product suite.

Execution Scope

Delivered Scope & Responsibilities

Architecture & System Design

Designed zero-runtime CSS custom property design token architecture and Webpack Module Federation host shell.

Backend & API Development

Created component registry API and automated npm package release pipeline.

Frontend or Mobile Application

Built 60+ accessible React components with keyboard navigation and dark/light modes.

Database Architecture & Persistence

Structured token schema metadata in JSON with automated Tailwind CSS preset export.

Authentication & Permissions

Configured SSO tenant theme overrides via CSS custom properties.

Infrastructure & Deployment

Integrated Chromatic visual regression testing and GitHub Actions CI pipelines.

Monitoring & Maintenance

Configured automated Axe-core accessibility testing across all pull requests.

Technical Rationale

Architecture Decisions, Rejected Alternatives & Accepted Trade-Offs

1

Zero-Runtime CSS Variables with Tailwind CSS Preset instead of Runtime CSS-in-JS

Why It Was Chosen:

Eliminated JavaScript runtime parsing overhead, enabled instantaneous theme changes, and cut initial UI bundle weight significantly.

Alternatives Rejected:

Styled-Components and Emotion were rejected due to runtime JS parsing costs on mobile devices.

Trade-Offs Accepted:

Required strict linting rules to enforce token naming conventions.

2

Webpack Module Federation for Micro-Frontend Integration

Why It Was Chosen:

Enabled distributed product teams to deploy features independently without triggering full portal re-builds.

Alternatives Rejected:

Monolithic single-repo rebuilds or iframe embeds.

Trade-Offs Accepted:

Required strict semantic versioning for shared React dependencies.

Evidence & Confidentiality Notice

Client details and proprietary application screens are omitted under confidentiality. Design system architecture is generalized with permission.

Scope Limitations & Benchmark Boundaries
  • Reported bundle size reductions reflect applications migrating from legacy runtime CSS-in-JS; applications already using lightweight static CSS will experience smaller reductions.
  • 100/100 accessibility score reflects core component library compliance; end-user application page layout must still adhere to semantic heading structures.
